Janet Matthews lives and works in Narre Warren North, Victoria, where she has a beautiful studio surrounded by native garden. Janet's work has been described as “weaving magic” with pencil.

“My art is my passion, especially pencil, colour pencil and graphite. I love to draw our botanical and wildlife subjects with intensity, personality and precise detail. I want to engage and inspire viewers with the beauty and uniqueness of our natural world.”

Her drawings capture the personality and “story” of her subjects, giving viewers a personal connection with the birds and flowers they see in their gardens and local parks. She loves to draw Australia’s botanical and wildlife subjects with intensity, personality and precise details, inspiring viewers to engage with the beauty and uniqueness of our natural world.

Janet runs classes and workshops teaching colour pencil techniques as well as has E-books, E-workshops and dvd’s available. More info is on her website.

She is a multi-award winning artist exhibiting regularly in Australia and overseas.

She has artwork in the collection of the New York State Museum, USA and the Roberson Museum and Science Centre, New York, USA. She won a Top Award at the Focus on Nature exhibition at the New York State Museum in 2014.

In 2023 Janet’s artwork featured on Gardening Australia show.

Janet has completed commissions for Australia Post for stamp images released in 2006 and 2009 and 2021;

In 2021 Janet’s drawing won the Wildlife Art Museum of Australia Excellence award.

Her drawing of Sturt Desert Pea represented Australia in the World Wide Botanical Exhibition 2018

Janet is a Fellow of the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia and a Fellow of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists. She has a Diploma and a Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts, Monash University.

Her work has been published in many magazines as well as books, including “50 Top Australian Artists”, “Wild Inspirations“ (Wildlife Art Museum of Australia) and “Flora of Australia” 2018.
