    • Collinsvale Reserve, 10 Hall Rd, Collinsvale, TAS 7012

Join Friends of Collinsvale each month for a Nature Journaling session.

Your guide will be local botanist and artist Dr Tanya Scharaschkin. Tanya will introduce you to nature journaling and will guide you along the way. You don't need to have any drawing skills. This is an opportunity to spend some quiet time observing and documenting nature.

What to bring: Bring something to write on (e.g., a notebook, journal or artist sketch pad) and something to write with (e.g., pen, pencil, marker, coloured pencils). A clipboard can be handy. You might want to bring a picnic blanket or camp chair to sit on. Feel free to bring a snack and a drink with you (there are no shops in Collinsvale). Toilets are located at the Hall.

Safety: Please dress appropriately for the weather (it could be wet and windy, or hot and sunny). Fingerless gloves could be useful if cold. Bring a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. The walking track and ground around the Landcare container is uneven. Please wear good walking shoes.

Directions: Meet at the "Landcare Container" opposite the Dog Park. Drive up Hall Road, and continue to drive past the Collinsvale Memorial Hall, the Fire Station and the Machinery Club. The "Landcare Container" will be on your right, up a small slope. We will start at 10 and finish at 11:30am.

The 2021 United Nations IPCC Report warned that we need to keep the global temperature below a 1.5° C rise by 2030. At that time … 2030 was 3000 days away.

I set myself a challenge – to do a drawing/painting a day for the next 3000 days on a series of scrolls, the purpose of which is to provide a visual record of the plants we are in danger of losing.

I started my drawings on Earth Hour Day, 26 March 2022

    .

The format of a scroll is important because it is a symbol of life, time and wisdom.  Both ends rolled up indicate a life that is folding and unfurling. Our lives in this time of climate change are like a scroll of uncertain length where the past has already been written and the future is hidden. We only see the present clearly.

Over 1100 days have passed since that significant IPCC report and still little has been achieved. There are less than 2000 days to go until 2030. What can we do?

The Scrolls have recently been shown in the USA, the UK, France, The Netherlands, Austria and Singapore.  People's reactions have been the same all over the world.  What can we do?

Come and visit The Scrolls and talk about the options we have - at Belco Arts during the exhibition from Thursday to Sunday 10am-3pm. It will be a wonderful opportunity to view The Scrolls while I am working on my daily drawings at the gallery.

Where The Belconnen Arts Centre, Belconnen, Canberra

When:   Opening Night -  6 pm on Friday 7th February, by Professor Mark Howden.  Professor Howden from the ANU is Australia's representative on the United Nations  IPCC Committee that wrote the report from which this artwork grew.

General Opening Times:  Tuesday - Sunday 10am - 4 pm

This will be the first time that all of The Scrolls have been shown together.  If you are concerned about the climate crisis and biodiversity issues, this will be the place to be - to consider the issues as well as looking at positive actions we can all take as we move into the future.

Linda Lunnon will be doing a 1 day workshop on Scratchboard for Botanical Art in the Solander Studio at the Australian National Botanic Gardens on 13 April 2025 from 9:30am to 4:00pm.

    Introduction to botanicals in scratchboard

This one day workshop will introduce participants to the meditative art of scratchboard. Scratchboard is a subtractive art medium, where a base panel is covered with a fine layer of white kaolin clay and sprayed with black ink. Marks are then etched into the black ink with sharp tools to reveal the white clay underneath. Linda will guide you through scratchboard techniques using various tools to create textures useful for botanical subjects. You are welcome to bring your own scratchboard supplies or a materials kit can be purchased for $30 on the day. These kits will include everything needed to create a 5x7 inch scratchboard piece. Reference images will be available to use or you're welcome to bring your own. Linda will bring a variety of tools to share during the workshop, including coloured inks for those that would like to dabble in adding colour.

    Suitable for beginner to intermediate.

    Materials kit:

    - Practice sheet of scratchboard

    - 5x7 inch Ampersand scratchboard panel

    - Saral white transfer paper

    - Ampersand scratch tool

    - Various tattoo needles

    - Black Pitt pen

    Optional for participants to bring:

    - Xacto scalpel, tattoo needles, other fine, sharp tools suitable for etching

    - Fibreglass brushes

    - Transparent inks or watercolour and brushes

    - Reference images to fit a 5 x 7 inch panel.

The macrocarpa is a beautiful plant, yet it is quirky with its many flawed leaves and often covered in spiderwebs. A delightful subject, perfect for colour pencil which is wonderful for creating details.

Janet’s workshop are suitable for beginners as well as advanced skill levels. Experience with colour pencil is not necessary.
